Description

This is the first monograph in a series of monographs that provide a compendium of perspectives on the broad theme of educational principles and practice in the field of vision impairment in Australia. The purpose of the monograph series is to help readers to develop an understanding of current theories and practices in education and health provision for young children and students with vision impairment, including those with deafblindness and additional disabilities. The contributing authors are regarded by the editors as contemporary Australian leaders in the field of vision impairment. The monograph series has been written for a wide range of readers, including experienced, novice, and “soon-to-be” Specialist Teachers (Vision Impairment), allied health professionals, and parents and families of children and students with vision impairment.

The four papers included in Monograph 1 address the foundations of education provision in Australia for students with vision impairment. The authors explore the links between current Australian legislation and policies in the area of disability, and educational and medical perspectives on service provision for students with vision impairment. In particular, the papers address (i) principles, policies and legislation; (ii) the visual process and the clinical assessment of visual function; (iii) a framework for introducing access technology and optical devices to students with vision impairment; and (iv) orientation and mobility perspectives and approaches.
